"Sula"

For the class presentation of Sula we discussed 4 different discussion topics about the book. The first one was comparing and contrasting the valley vs. the bottom and how they were portrayed in the book. The weather in the bottom was worse than in the valley. they had the winds and they felt more of the storm when they would pass through. The race of people in each place were even different; in the valley there were whites and in the bottom there were blacks.Even the agriculture was better in the valley. There were no jobs for the blacks. The next discussion was on Nel and Sula. Nel was raised with money but ended up having to work because Sula takes her husband. Conventional/unconventional gender roles were also discussed. We talked about Hannah made men feeel complete and Eva made men feel admirable.I believe that Hannah is just sexually liberated and not a sexual deviant. If a woman wants to be promiscuous, there is no reason for her to be called a deviant. If men do it then women can too. Although, it is not the norm thing to do it is still ok to sway from the path everyone else lives. Lastly, we talked about the Bottom before and after Sula.Their view of Sula was almost as if she were an evil scapegoat; people had a reason not to do bad things because they had her in mind. Everyone turned good once she came around. Her effects in life were that she treated kids better, and loved men more. However, after Sula died everyone went back to their old ways of being... they had no reason to be good anymore.
